The reason she had to return after her inevitable leave?
World’s greatest playwright born in Norway, Henrik Ibsen’s major work A Doll’s House ends when Nora leaves the house and lets go of her old life, in which she could not be herself while fulfilling the social role she was demanded of. The play resulted in a fierce debate shortly after it was staged; given the atmosphere of the 19th-century European society, the ending where a woman abandons the household to find herself was a shocking breakaway that was difficult to be accepted. At the same time, over 140 years since its premiere, the work has continued to stimulate numerous directors to find a more contemporary, or even a more radical conclusion to the story.
And in 2017, Nora returns home and knocks on the door. A Doll’s House, Part 2, a work written by the American playwright Lucas Hnath and nominated for the ‘Drama Desk Award’, ‘Outer Critics Circles Awards’, and as many as eight Tony Awards(Best Play, Best Direction of a Play, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play, and Best Costume Design of a Play) begins by Nora returning home after 15 years. Why did Nora return? How did the lives of those who were left behind and those who left the house change?
One of today’s most noteworthy playwrights in the United States, Lucas Hnath’s A Doll’s House, Part 2 toured to 27 theaters the next year it was premiered, ranking as the most performed piece of 2018. This time, the work will be staged as a Korean version and will be directed by Minjung KIM, known for her delicate and sensible direction in works like Heisenberg and Venus in Fur. The participation of a solid creative team and casts from Korea heightens the expectation.
Now, the knock has stopped. The door is opening. Let us meet Nora, who has returned home.
